With up to 60% of people experiencing it, it's about time we started learning how to look after our dry skin! Keep on reading to find out my top tips for banishing that dryness.
1. Exfoliate Regularly
But not too regularly! Aim for 2-3 times per week. Exfoliation is the removal of the build up of dead
skin cells. Our skin naturally regenerates itself by creating new skin cells constantly, which means the older ones have to die and fall off. As we age this process tends to slow down and the cells can get stuck, so now it's our job to give it a helping hand. With dry skin types, if you don't remove this build up of cells they will often become obvious to the eye and appear flaky. My favourite products to use for this are light chemical exfoliants. They melt the bonds that hold the skin cells together to allow them to be free, therefore increasing your cellular turnover.
2. Use a Hydrating Serum
Serums are often missed in skincare routines but in my opinion they're essential! Think of them like a
strong burst of concentrated skincare goodness. They are designed to seep deep into the layers of the skin to deliver active ingredients. My go to for dry skin is a multi molecular weight Hyaluronic acid serum. This will deliver intense hydration and an immediate plumped effect to the skin due to its ability to attract water.
3. Use a Deeply Nourishing Moisturiser
A good quality moisturiser makes the world of difference. Opt for something a little thicker with a high emollient content to give you that extra level of comfort all day long. This should be applied after your serum for the best results. I favour moisturisers with Ceramides in that help to prevent water loss, keeping the skin fresher for longer!
4. Top Up with a Facial Oil
Now this ones a game changer. If you haven't tried a facial oil then you are majorly missing out. Applied on top of your daily moisturiser, it perfectly seals that hydration into place. Repairing oils packed with antioxidants is an amazing choice for those with dry skin, helping to protect your skins natural defence barrier at the same time!
5. Drink Plenty of Water
Working from the inside out is extremely effective. Every single thing in your body needs water to function but unfortunately your skin comes last on the list of importance. This means that if you are dehydrated, your skin will be the first to suffer for it. Try and aim for 2 litres a day and not only will your skin thank you for it, you will even notice improvements in the quality of your hair and nails too!
