Microneedling is one of the skincare techniques that has caused a lot of mixed feelings lately. Many girls would like to try it out, but they are not thrilled about the pain and invasiveness of the procedure.
If you are one of them, here’s some good news for you - many experts lately agree that a gentler, no-bleeding approach is preferred to the classic “vampire facial”.
What is Microneedling?
Microneedling is a skincare procedure that uses small needles to puncture the very first layers of the skin. When done right, the treatment results in a stimulated production of collagen and a firmer, suppler and more even looking skin.
Microneedling is usually performed with a device called dermapen. Dermapen is an electric pen with a configuration of thin and short needles on top. It allows practitioners to safely and evenly treat the skin.
The needles can range in size, but most beauty experts prefer using 0.5 – 1 mm length. They also agree that there’s never really a need to go over 1.5 mm for treating the facial skin, as puncturing the skin deeper than that only increases the bleeding and pain, not so much the results (excluding medical needling).
Microneedling can also be performed by using a Dermaroller, but this is advised at shallow depths and should only be done at home safely when under the guidance of a skincare professional.
How Does Microneedling Work?
Microneedling is often called Collagen Induction Therapy (CIT). And the principle of collagen induction relies on the skin’s natural ability to heal and repair itself.
When the skin is injured, it works to repair itself and heal the wound. This regeneration process includes overproduction of collagen and elastin. Simply put, it is a process that creates a new, healthier layer of skin to replace the old, injured one.
Pretty cool, right?
And that is exactly what microneedling does. It creates a lot of tiny, controlled injuries all over the skin, triggering the skin’s natural healing process and encouraging it to produce more collagen and elastin. This in return gives you a much better, younger and fresher looking skin.
What Are The Benefits For Your Skin?
Stimulating the skin to repair itself is pretty much as beneficial as it sounds. Microneedling is a safe (requires minimal downtime) and effective treatment that can help you a lot to improve the texture and general appearance of your skin.
Though almost anyone can benefit from it, microneedling is most often used to:
reduce the appearance of acne scars;
reduce other types of small scars, stretch marks and other skin imperfections;
smooth out the skin and treat fine lines and wrinkles;
improve the skin’s texture, firmness and elasticity;
fade age spots, sun damage and pigmentation;
reduce the appearance of large pores;
even out the skin tone, brighten the skin and make it plump and soft;
improve the absorption and effectiveness of the products you apply next.
